The Aglime Council Sampling and Testing Guidelines

Aglime Sampling and testing the Aglime Council requests that the Aglime Council member plants have their Certified Aggregate Technician take the aglime samples and send the samples to the IMAA Office via UPS, Priority Mail or some other acceptable courier service. The Aglime Council wishes to stress that their expectations are that the sample taken by the CAPP technician will represent actual stockpile and/or plant conditions. The attached sheet explains the procedure that will be followed for all Aglime Council member plants.
After the Association Office has received all samples, each sample will be assigned a sample number. All sample numbers will be placed in a container. Sample numbers will be drawn from the container to determine the 2013-14 test “blind” samples to be sent with the other samples to Bowser-Morner Testing Laboratory. These “blind” samples are used as a check on laboratory accuracy.

Aglime Sampling Procedure

1

SAMPLE

Sample the aglime stockpile and/or production with a sampling tube at three separate stockpile locations and/or production time intervals. (Special Note: Using a sampling tube will improve the type of sample taken. In most cases it will eliminate the effects of stockpile segregation.)

2

COMBINE

Combine the three separate sample portions into one large sample of approximately 1,500 grams. Mix the combined portions to ensure that a good mixture has been achieved. Then split the large sample into three 500 +/- gram sub-samples.

3

PACKAGE

Place each of the 500 gram sub-samples into a separate plastic baggie. It is very important to double bag each sample.

4

LABEL

Label each individual sub-sample as sample A, sample B, and sample C.

5

IDENTIFY

Each sub-sample bag must be identified and labeled both inside and outside with the following information: (use the enclosed label form(s) specifically made for your samples)

  • Company Name
  • Plant Location
  • Aglime Type (dolomitic or calcitic; fine; course; regular; etc.)
  • County
  • Ledge
  • INDOT Source Number

This information helps us track the test results of each aglime sample and helps prevent errors in the publication process.

6

SELECT

Select two of these sub-samples and send them to the IMAA Office.

7

RETAIN

Retain one sub-sample at your plant until the final aglime test report is received. This sample may be needed for retesting, if an error occurs in the sampling and testing program.

The following test methods are followed by Bowser-Morner Testing Laboratory for sample analysis.

Calcium – ASTM C1271

Calcium Carbonate Equivalence – ASTM C25

Magnesium – ASTM C1271

Pulverize to Minus #60 – ASTM C50

Wet Sieve Analysis – ASTM C110
